THE 9TH GRADE OPPORTUNITY: TRANSFORMING SCHOOLS FROM THE BOTTOM UP - GENERAL SESSION

Scott Habeeb walks through the core elements of transforming schools starting with the ninth grade. He uses Mr. Holland’s Opus throughout.

Scott Habeeb will talk about using content and creativity to inspire young people during the normal function of a classroom. He has a passion for bringing content and life application to students.

Todd Novak has spent over a decade interacting with teams at the table. He will present six practices that enhance and strengthen the work of the team and their ability to impact freshmen.

CONNECTIONS: 10 SUMMER DAYS TO START HIGH SCHOOL WELL

Matt Kiesow will present the core philosophy of what we do during the summer. It’s called Connections. He will give an overview of the 10 days and practical tips on how your school district can prepare freshman leaders for the first day of school. There is also the option to purchase the training module at a discount for conference attendees.

A CASE STUDY: TWO YEARS FOR THE FRESHMAN ACADEMY @ HARRISBURG HIGH SCHOOL AND PLANS TO EXPAND

Brad Seamer is the Assistant Principal and Freshman Academy Coordinator at Harrisburg High School. He will present a case study of what they have learned during their continued rapid expansion. He will talk about their Academy model and plans for the future that include a transitional all-freshman high school.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING (PBL) IN A FRESHMAN ACADEMY

Lindsey Keiper and Shane Boysen are a part of The Project Based Academy and The Freshman Academy at Jefferson High School. They will walk through the philosophy of PBL and how it is in concert with The Freshman Academy.

TWO FRESHMAN ACADEMY COORDINATORS IN A DYNAMIC DIALOGUE ABOUT TEAM FUNCTION AND SUCCESS

Josh Smith and Todd Novak will dialogue about key ideas that are immediately useful. Both are Freshman Academy Coordinators at different schools in the Sioux Falls School District. This fast-paced hour is application-rich. Q and A will wrap it up.

Scott will queue up ideas about assessment that are practical and insightful. Scott started a network of teachers around the idea of assessment. We are all about learning. How do we know if they learned it? We assess well.

HOW A FRESHMAN ACADEMY INVESTS TIME: A WEEK IN REVIEW

Todd will lay out a case that time given to teachers in the Freshman Academy format is an investment with significant return. A walk through a week of The Freshman Academy at Jefferson High School is used to show the practical, the philosophical, and the structural aspects of time use. Additional resources are cited so that all attendees to go deeper into these ideas.

A PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE: SUPPORTING FRESHMAN TRANSITION WITH TEACHERS, TREASURE, AND TIME

Scott will talk about the many ways a freshman academy can be structured. As an administrator for almost two decades and a presenter and clinician at scores of school districts and conferences, he has unique and creative ways to help schools meet the demands of the budget, the needs of the students, and the opportunity for teachers when a freshman academy is created. There will be a significant time for questions.
